RULE # 1 Apply sunscreen every day.
Sunscreen can slow down skin aging. It can also help prevent skin cancer. Look for a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 (or higher), and water resistance.
RULE # 2 Gently wash your face.
Gentle cleansing helps skin look its best. Wet face with lukewarm water. Next apply a mild cleanser, gently applying the cleanser in a circular motion with your fingertips. Lastly, completely rinse off the cleanser and gently pat your face dry with a clean towel.
RULE # 3 Stress less.
Finding healthy ways to manage stress can help your skin too. Certain skin ailments like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (commonly known as eczema) often appear for the first time when someone undergoes stress. Stress can also cause flare-ups of many skin conditions, including acne and rosacea.
RULE # 4 Eat healthy, balanced meals.
Foods that contain high levels of collagen-boosting Vitamin C (strawberries, citrus fruits, bell peppers, kale, broccoli) and those that contain antioxidant rich Vitamins A and E (almond butter, pumpkin, carrots, avocado, tomatoes) are best for maintaining healthy skin.
RULE # 5 Don't smoke.
Aside from the obvious dangers of smoking as it relates to lung cancer and other respiratory diseases, smoking speeds up how quickly your skin ages. Additionally, research shows that smoking worsens some skin diseases, including psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa.
RULE # 6 Stay hydrated.
Drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day helps to keep skin cells hydrated and retains skin moisture.
RULE # 7 Use the appropriate skin care product.
Use skin care products that match your skin's needs. Know your skin type — oily, dry, normal, combination, or sensitive. Do you have a skin condition? Using products formulated for your skin's needs will help your skin look and feel its best.
